A journey report is a web page that tells the story of where one or more of your tracked items have been: which places, which zones, for how long, at what temperature, and how each stop is known. Anyone with the link can open it — no account, no app — and it stays up to date by itself. Print its link as a QR code, stick it on a crate beside the Bluetooth tag, and whoever scans it sees that crate's chain of custody.
#What It Does
- Turns sightings into a story. Every time a phone running ambientChat hears an item's Bluetooth tag near a zone's beacon, or you scan or move the item, that is a stop. The report lays the stops out on one page: a coloured bar per item showing which zone it was in and for how long, the temperature, and a table of every stop.
- Stays live. The page re-reads your data each time someone opens it. Carry the tag to another zone, reopen the link, and the move is there. By default it shows the last seven days, rolling — always the most recent week.
- Says how it knows. Each stop is marked Tag heard here, Scanned here, Set by hand or Inferred. A stop nothing has seen leave says not observed since rather than pretending the item is still there, and gaps in the temperature readings are drawn dashed rather than invented.
- Covers items without a tag, honestly. An item nothing placed in the window gets a grey bar with its last known place and date, marked Before this window — or Not located in this window if it has never been placed.
#How to Use It
#Make a report
iOS app
- One item: open the item's tracking sheet and tap Share journey report.
- Several items: tap Select, tick up to 25 items, then tap Journey (the footsteps button). Already ticked some items inside a folder? The folder's Journey button at the top shares exactly those too.
- A whole folder: inside the folder, tap Journey beside Share — it ticks the folder's tracked items for you; tap Journey without changing anything to share the folder's live page, which picks up items filed into the folder later. Or long-press the folder and choose Share journey report.
The link goes to the share sheet — Copy it, or send it straight on.
Admin Web The same buttons, in the same places: Select → Journey, the folder's Journey beside Share, and Share journey report in a folder's ⋯ menu. The page opens in a new tab and its link is copied for you.
Chat (in the app, or Claude Desktop through MCP) "Make a journey report for the tape measure and give me the link." or "Journey report for the crates in my Demo Kit folder." Chat can also make a report for a fixed date range — "…for the first week of October" — which stays on those dates instead of rolling.
#Find your reports
Every report is saved as a document in the Journey Reports folder, and it also appears among each item's documents. Asking for the same report again — same items, same settings — gives you the same document and the same link, not a second copy.
#How long it lasts
Until you delete it. A journey report's link has no expiry date. Leave it alone and it keeps working, and keeps showing the latest seven days, for as long as the report document exists.
#Take it down
Delete the report document (from the Journey Reports folder or the item's documents) — or delete the folder it is in, which takes down every report inside. The page comes down at once — anyone opening the link is told it is no longer shared — and everything the report set up goes with it: the public link and the report's place on each item.
- Restoring it from the trash brings the document back, not the link. The old link stays dead. To publish again, make the report again — you get a new link.
- Any QR codes you printed stop working when you delete the report, and a re-made report needs a new code.
- To keep the document but take the page down, open the report and stop sharing its link from the Share sheet.
#Put it on a tag with a QR code — for a demo
This is the set-up for showing a crate's journey in AR: a physical tag that tells its own story when you point a phone at it.
- Make the report for the item — or, better for a demo kit, for a folder, so items you add later appear on the same link.
- Copy its link — from the share sheet on the phone, or it is already copied on the web.
- Turn the link into a QR code with any QR code maker — a free website, or a QR action in the iPhone's Shortcuts app. ambientChat does not make QR codes itself.
- Print it and stick it on the crate, next to the Bluetooth tag.
- Scan it.
- Any phone camera opens the journey page in the browser.
- In ambientChat, open Scan and choose AR. Point at the code: a card for the page appears pinned to the label. Tap AI to ask about it, or Save to keep it in your documents as a link. (AR scan is available on iPhones that support it; it does not run in the simulator.)
Because the link stays the same for as long as the report exists, the printed code never needs reprinting — move the crate, and the next scan shows the move.
#Privacy
A journey page is public to anyone who has the link, so it is careful about what it shows:
- Positions are rounded to about 10 km by default. Ask for exact positions only when the place is not somewhere private.
- A street address from a phone's GPS never prints unless the report was made with exact positions — a city-level page says located by GPS instead. Your own zone names always show.
- No one can make a report about someone else's items.
#Options
| Option | Default | How to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Time window | Last 7 days, rolling | Ask chat for a different number of days, or a fixed date range |
| Position detail | Rounded to about 10 km | Ask for exact positions, or names only (no map) |
| Items | One item, a selection (up to 25), or a folder | Select, the folder's Journey, or chat |
| Partner name | None | Ask chat to add a partner's name beside ours |
#Known Limitations
- No built-in QR code maker — use any QR code maker with the report's link.
- In AR, a journey QR code shows a card for the page, not a live journey card of its own — tap AI for what it says, or open the page.
- Up to 25 items per report. A folder that grows past 25 after its report was made shows the snapshot saved with the report, and says so.
- Deleting the report is the only way to retire its link besides stopping sharing; there is no expiry date to set.
